Pull up a seat! My 10 all-time favourite chairs.
I've had chairs on the brain lately as I really need to purchase a few to fill in some holes in my house! (I hate to admit it, but my son has had a desk with NO chair to sit on for nearly 2 years now!! Bad mommy....)
So I thought I would share with you my Top 10 all-time favourite chair styles! Here we go....
#1. The Barcelona Chair.
Designed in 1929 by Mies van der Rohe, the Barcelona chair is a timeless beauty. Modern and sophisticated, yet warm and inviting. Hands-down my all-time favourite! I will own one of these chairs someday!
#2. The Eames Molded Plastic Dowel Leg Side Chair (or DSW chair)
Created by Charles & Ray Eames in 1950, the were the first to industrially manufacture molded plastic chairs. They saw molded plastic as a way to create fluid organic shapes to mold ergonomically with the body to produce a surprisingly comfortable and sturdy chair. The chairs also come with a metal base, but I prefer the dowel or wood base version. The wood adds a bit of warmth to the sleek modern style. My Sister just recently purchased these white ones for her apartment in Toronto and they look fabulous, don't ya think!? This space just makes me want to settle in with my cup of coffee and Sunday morning paper:)
#3. The Louis Ghost Chair
In 2002, Philippe Starck designed this light as air masterpiece modeled after the French 18th century Louis XV chair. This chair adds a unique statement to a traditionally styled room. A modern day classic that is sure to never go out of style! Perfect for small spaces! And the pastel colour selections are to die for! Add seat cushions or a mohair throw to dress it up.
#4. The Thonet Bentwood Chair
Also widely known as the Bistro chair, Micheal Thonet created this chair in 1859 by bending steamed pieces of wood into fluid shapes that make up the seat, back and legs of this chair. A great example of timeless design....this chair is as stylish today as it was back in 1859! (I need one of these for my desk in the kitchen.....)
#5. The Eames Lounge Chair
You only need one word to describe this chair...iconic. Created by the dynamic Eames duo in 1956 out of molded plywood and leather, you can see the original chair at it's permanent location in the New York Museum of Modern Art. This powerhouse chair just ooozes masculine charm and sexiness. All you need is a cigarette and a glass of scotch to feel like you are on the set of Mad Men.
#6. The Klismos Chair
The Ancient Greeks really knew what they were doing when they created this style of chair. Graceful and feminine with the curved back and splayed legs, the Klismos chair is a truly beautiful chair.
#7. The Butterfly Chair
This chair is just cool. Designed by Argentinian architect Jorge Ferrari-Hardoy in 1938, it's simply a leather sling over a metal frame. I particularly love the black and white cow-hide sling chairs. This chair has evolved into what we see all over campsites and backyards today as the bagchairs (although not nearly as stylish!)

#8. The Oval Back Neo-Classical Louis XVI Chair
Probably the most versatile chair around. It goes with just about any decor style from traditional to contemporary, and can be updated easily by changing the fabric and a coat of paint. Neo-classic furniture style is reminiscent of 18th century France with tapered legs, soft geometric shapes and simpler designs.
#9. The Tulip Chair
Considered a space age chair when Eero Saarinen designed this chair in 1956, the Tulip Chair made history by becoming the first ever one legged chair. A sleek and sexy chair!
and finally.....
#10. The Chaise Lounge
Absolutely no one can resist curling up with a good book in a chaise lounge, a true symbol of luxury that has been around since the days of Cleopatra. I love the classic look of this one piled with the pillows and a cozy throw....definitely on my wish list! Not exactly a chair, but just too good to leave off of the list!
