My new craft room project & why I need a door lock
Exhibit A.The victim.
So as you can see, I need somewhere that I can leave what I'm working on and lock the door to guard my scissors and other tools from the Future Barbers of America.
The culprit.
Since this is also our guest room, and we do host friends and Family from out of town quite a bit, I need to make this room pretty as well as functional. I also don't want it to scream 'CRAFT ROOM' when you walk in, so a lot of smart, hidden storage will be necessary. And who wouldn't want a serene and pretty room that you can 'lock' yourself into time to time!
Here's what the room looks like now. (and don't judge! I know it's messy, but truth be told I didn't feel like cleaning it to snap pictures.)
And yes, those are curtain panels hanging from the mini-blinds. There is a method to my madness. I just wanted to see what they would look like! Anyways, I don't want to spend a fortune on this room, so I'm keeping the bedding, just maybe adding a few toss pillows, and making my own window treatments to blend with the curtain panels I scored at IKEA for $9 bucks each.
The credenza was our old TV stand that co-ordinates with the rest of the bedroom set, so I moved it up here with the intention of fixing it up a bit and hanging some shelving above. The drawers will work great for housing tools and supplies.
The table was just sitting in our basement and I am planning on painting it. The size is perfect for the foot of the bed, and I like that it has a drop leaf so I can increase my work space when i need it, then drop the leaf down to make more room for guests. I am on the hunt for a chair to re-finish as the one I'm using right now is part of our dining set, and a new set of lamps are in order for the end tables.
I created a mood-board to collectively visualize what the room would look like with all of my ideas put together.
I came across this tone-on-tone zebra wallpaper from Pinterest, and it just happens that I have a zebra wall stencil that has been sitting in my closet for about 2 years now, so I'm finally going to put it to use and re-create the look of this wallpaper using only paint.
I wanted to add a pop of yellow to break up all the blues in the room and brighten it up a bit. You can see the floating shelves I incorporated above the credenza that houses some great looking storage pieces amongst some decorative pieces. This way it gives my guest something nice to look at while also providing great storage for all my crafting supplies.
While I was out fabric shopping the other day, I fell in love with this Ikat pattern and decided to buy a couple of yards to make the roman blinds to replace the ugly white slat blinds. It strays a little from my original intention of some bold geometric patterns, but as you can see, it works really well with the pattern in the bed-spread, and co-ordinates beautifully with my curtain panels.
The softness of this pattern balances better with the geometric pattern already found in the coverlet. Adding more geo-metrics was just a little over-whelming, so I'll have to re-think my fabrics just a little bit.
All-in all I think this space will work out perfectly as a craft room. It also has a walk-in closet for more storage, and most importantly, a lock on the door;)
Next up is tackling the stenciled feature wall! I'll keep you posted as to my progress in this room.
On another note, if you haven't already, make sure you enter the fabulous giveaway I'm hosting! It will be open until 9pm EST on Monday, February 20th, so there's still plenty of time to enter.
