A thrifted lamp makeover

I found this lamp base at my local thrift store a while back, and fell in love with the cool bamboo lattice pattern. I just had to have it although I had no idea what I was going to do with it, but for $6 I knew I couldn't just leave it behind for someone else to snatch up!

So down in the basement it went where I kind of forgot about it. Then just the other day I was shopping at Target, bee-lining for the Easter candy section and trying to not get side tracked when the skies opened up over the home clearance section, and there layed this beauty of a lamp shade marked down to $13.98! The only one left. It was fate.

A light bulb went off and I instantly remembered  my lamp in the basement. The ribbon banding on the shade is a perfect pewter color and would look amazing with the base painted a greyish blue. (How is that Target has these wonderful magnetic powers that leads you right into the sections you are not supposed to go to!! I swear, I never leave that place with only the items on my shopping list.)

Now to find the paint. After  4, yes 4 different stores to find the perfect shade of blue for my lamp, I finally find one at Ace Hardware. I'm a little picky when it comes to paint, and a lot of the spray paints out there were either too aqua or too turquoise, which I didn't want. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving those colors right now, just not for this project. The winner was the Ace brand High Seas Blue in a gloss finish. It kind of reminds me of a Wedgwood blue. Perfect.

To paint the base, I first taped off the cord and the bulb socket, then wrapped them in a plastic bag. I painted quite a few light even coats of the paint to avoid the paint dripping as it dried. Here's what it looked like after the first coat. (Sorry for the blurred picture, but this is the only one I took! Paint fumes must of been blurring my vision;)

This is the first time I've worked with the Ace brand paint, but I have to say I really liked it! It didn't drip or run at all and dried very quickly with a nice, even gloss finish. And at only $3.99 a can I'll definitely be buying this again. After about 5 or 6 coats, the lamp was done and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out!

A pretty, unique addition for my office, and it only cost me $22. Not too shabby if you ask me.
