Braces Then....Invisalign Now.

Brace face. Tinsel teeth. Metal Mouth. If you wore braces as a teenager, you've probably have heard them all. I wore them for almost 3 years, and the pain and discomfort of wearing braces is something I will never forget. I used to have to carry around wax in my pocket to apply to my brackets so they wouldn't cut up the inside of my mouth. And don't even get me started on those rubber bands!! (At least I was lucky enough that I didn't have to suffer through head gear.)
I clearly remember the pain after the first day of wearing my braces. My Mom had to grind my food up in a food grinder just so I was able to eat something. I think after that I lived on a liquid diet for about a week before I was able to chew again. And when I was able to finally eat solids again, I was constantly getting food stuck in my braces! I always had to have my friends look at my teeth when I was done eating so they could let me know if I missed a piece of my lunch.
Yup. That's me in the 8th grade circa 1991. Braces, Big bangs and all! Probably the most embarrassing photo I have ever posted of myself on the internet. 22 (gasp!) years later, my teeth are still pretty straight and I don't regret suffering for a few years for a nicer smile, BUT if we had Invisalign way back then, WOW would it have made my life so much easier! Imagine.....you could take your braces off to eat!
Braces seem to be a thing of the past, just like big bangs. Gone are the days of clunky head gear, elastics, and a mouth full of metal. The Invisalign and Invisalign Teen system uses clear, lightweight, removable plastic aligners that fit your teeth smoothly and snugly. AND they are just as effective as traditional braces with results in less time, usually about a year. Everyone I knew that had traditional braces were in them for about 3!
Another benefit of using Invisalign for Teens or pre-teens is since the aligners are removable, kids can eat, brush and floss as they normally would, which is a struggle with traditional braces. Remember trying to floss?! I used to have to thread the floss in between the wires on every.single.tooth. And since Invisalign is virtually invisible, your child will be able to smile in confidence instead of hiding their mouth full of metal.
I know a few adults that have also benefited from Invisalign. If you are unhappy with your smile and need to straighten those teeth, or if you had braces in the past and just had a few teeth move out of alignment (like me!) and want a quick fix, this system would be perfect. For more information on Invisalign and Invisalign Teen, make sure to check out their website, or click here to find a doctor near you that specializes in Invisalign.
So, if you had to do it all over again, which option would you choose?! Traditional braces, or Invisalign? Can you guess what my answer would be?!
