Decorating for Fall using the 5 Senses
Fall is here and if you are anything like me, you crave all things cozy as the weather turns. This time of year I love snuggling up by the fire with a warm blanket, sipping on a steaming hot cup of tea or coffee from my favourite mug while reading a good book.
Transitioning your home to create that warm and cozy feeling can be easy and inexpensive. Read on for a few tips on decorating for fall using the 5 senses; Sight, Smell, Sound, Touch & Taste.
sight
What does fall look like to you? To me, it’s the warm hues created by the turning leaves, the golden tone the sky takes on and the muted browns and greens of the earth transitioning into hibernation mode. An easy way to bring these fall elements into your home is by swapping out throw pillows, blankets and even artwork for options that have more muted tones. Try bringing those outside elements in by displaying some fresh cut branches in an earthenware pot, or filling a bowl with collected acorns.
smell
Smell can be one of the first things you notice when you walk into a room, and it can instantly transform the way your home feels. Your sense of small can also trigger memories and feelings. When you get a wiff of pumpkin spice in the air, are you reminded of gathering around the Thanksgiving table with friends and family? Or a recent visit to the pumpkin patch with the kids? Scented candles or essential oil diffusers are a great way to add the scents of fall into your home, as are fall flowers and foliage.
touch
When I think of warm and cozy, my mind automatically goes to the thought of curling up with a chunky knit blanket or a soft, fuzzy pillow. Bringing in lots of textural elements and textiles such as faux firs, wickers and knits can give your room a feeling of fall.
sound
There is something that summer and fall have in common, and that is campfires. Fall nights can still be warm enough to have outdoor fires, or if you have a wood burning fireplace in your home, you can recreate that experience indoors. Sitting by a crackling fire sipping a glass of wine with a cozy blanket, looking at the stars and listening to the rustling of leaves is my idea of a magical fall night. If you don’t have the luxury of a woodburning fireplace, you can also buy candles that have a crackling wick!
taste
Food as decor?! Why not! All the all fall tastes….apples, pumpkins, pears etc. can also double as fall kitchen decor. And let’s not forget the everyday things we use around our kitchen that can also double as decor, such as wooden bowls, cutting boards and baking dishes.
