Pro Shelf Styling Tips

One of the biggest challenges many of my clients face is styling, especially shelf styling! It’s one of those jobs that seem like it should be easy, but really takes a lot of planning and effort. Scale, texture, balance and interest all need to be considered when looking for the right pieces to add those finishing touches, and when done professionally can take your newly completed reno to a completely different level! Just check out these before and after photos of a recent clients house we styled as the final step at the end of their renovation.

Such a difference! Small changes, big impact. If you struggle with shelf styling, heres a few tips and tricks we have learned over the years to help give your space that WOW factor.

  • First, shop your house and look for items you can use. Not everything needs to be brand new! Books, plants, pottery, artwork, baskets, candle sticks and frames are items we use on rotation and are great anchor pieces.

  • Next, clear your shelves completely to create a blank slate. This way you won’t feel overwhelmed by looking at shelves that already have decor on them.

  • Now the fun begins! You want to create a balance of colour, texture and scale, so start by placing the pieces that have the heaviest visual weight to it, then layer in smaller pieces for balance.

  • The height and size (or scale) of objects is important. A larger scaled object can easily stand alone, but you want to group together smaller items of varying scale in groups of 3. Opt for objects that vary in size and shape to create an interesting grouping. If you need to gain height of a smaller object, try placing it on top of a stack of books.

  • A good tip when styling your frames and artwork is to stagger them by placing a larger piece at the back and a smaller at the front. Keep it interesting by mixing frame colours and materials! • It’s a great idea to play with decor that relates to the room that the shelves are in. In a kitchen or dining room, you can use plates, bowls, wine glasses or even coffee mugs as a way to fill your shelves. Also, pay attention to the books you are using in each space. Cook books are smarter to use in kitchens and dining rooms, but lifestyle and design books are better to be used in living rooms, offices and bedrooms.

Most importantly, have fun with styling and don’t be afraid to get creative! Throw in some objects with sentimental meaning and create something that is truly special.
