Carson’s Room Reveal
Well, it’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally done!! Welcome to Carson’s baseball/dino bedroom. Come on in…let’s take a tour, shall we?
If you remember back to when I started
, he asked for a Cincinnati Reds/Dino room. After some unsuccessful persuasion to steer him in another direction, I decided to embrace his requests and just go for it. After all, it’s his room, right?! And everyone (even 3 1/2 year olds) deserve a space that reflects them and they enjoy spending time in. So my goal was to incorporate baseballs and dinosaurs without making it
feel
like a themed room. A space that will grow as he grows. A fun space just for him.
You may have noticed already that the ceiling is red! I knew I wanted to keep the walls neutral and the furnishings sleek and simple, so the red ceiling was the perfect solution to bring in some bold color without overwhelming the space. I’m usually not one for painting ceilings, but it really makes a statement here and the room would just not feel the same if I stuck with plain white.
Since the bed is so low to the ground, there was such a large space on the wall to fill. I knew I wanted something oversized to hang up there, but I was terrified Carson would pull it down and get hurt. I made the
chalkboard by painting a square with chalkboard paint then attaching 1"x4 planks of pine to the wall to create the frame. Now I have a blank canvas and the “art” can change as quickly as Carson changes his mind! (which is quite often.) I drew a dinosaur in a Reds uniform in celebration of opening day here in Cincinnati last week!
I fell in love with a navy striped duvet from Serena and Lilly, but the price tag…not so in love with. $180! Ouch! I found
And it only cost $29.99. Much better. As far as the actual bed goes, you can read
as to why we chose to move Carson into a full bed straight from the crib, as well where we bought it.
A reading nook to the left of the bed is the perfect place for him to chill with a good book. I revamped a
from Ikea by painting the frame white and recovering the seat cushion with
this fun fabric from New Mom designs
.

!)
A modern
instead of a floor lamp makes a great statement piece.
Some
Invisible Floating Book Shelves
fit perfectly in between the two windows and hold all of Carson’s favorite books. I made the Roman blinds myself using
Premier Prints ZigZag Twill Storm
fabric from
The design with the grommets on the bottom happened as I accidently cut the fabric too short for the blinds and had to come up with a solution to lengthen them. Best mistake I ever made! I
LOVE
how they turned out! (Click
for the tutorial!)
On the other side of the bed, I created a small floating nightstand from an inexpensive $7
and turned a $10 wire basket from Home Goods into a rolling book cart.
I styled his existing dresser with an acrylic number sign I found at the flea market last year for $3 along with some fun vintage childrens books that were actually my Mom’s when she was a child. (Anyone else grow up with Noddy?!) A polka-dot fabric laundry bin from HomeGoods is perfect for holding all of his stuffed animals & toys.
The Dr. Suess quote is a free printable from
(thanks Imprintalish!!) that I chose to place on a clipboard instead of your typical picture frame.
My absolute
favorite
part of Carson’s room has to be his gallery wall. The red cabinet from Ikea was my inspiration for the red ceiling and is great for storing (aka hiding) all his toys.
The reds alphabet print is from
, and is framed with a the fun robot piggy bank I picked up from
on clearance for only $10. (The gold is no longer available, but you can still buy the
!)
A fun picture I created with Photoshop hangs above Carson's Curious George books. I cant get enough of the “awesome” quotes. Thank-you Barney Stinson:)
I found this oval open frame on clearance at Michael's and immediately thought it would be so fun to hang some sort of faux dino-taxidermy in it. After scrounging through the boys stash of dinosaur toys, I found this gem which is actually a container to hold smaller dinosaur toys. I simply spray painted it white and mounted it using
Command picture hanging strips
.
I love Dr. Suess quotes, so I used this
free printable from All For The Boys
to create a fun piece of canvas art. I thought it was the perfect quote to sit in from of the DIY map art I made.
The channel letter I picked up at a flea market last year for $20. The inside was a bit grungy and wouldn’t come clean, so a quick touch-up with some white spray paint brought it back to life.
A magnet board and a DIY floor pouf tucked away in the corner is the perfect place for Carson to play with his
.
Thanks to
for the great tutorial on the one seater
!
This room has come a
long
way since we took out the crib (gulp) last year . Here’s a quick before and after:
Before

After:
A super fun space fit for an energetic toddler.
And this little guy has come a long way too.
Sniff ,sniff
