Kitchen Update: Paint+Tile+New Rug
Last year I shared how we were installing a new backsplash, and that brought about the need want for a fresh new coat of paint and few little *tweeks* to update & brighten the space.
To jog your memory, this is what the kitchen looked like before....
Looking at all this green now is making me cringe! Ugh. I was so over it and ready for a change. I shared a mood board that I created for inspiration as well as what I had planned for the space which included a much needed tile backsplash and a fresh coat of paint.
Now that the backsplash is up and the walls are painted, its looking sooooo much better. I am completely smitten with the tile!! (And btw....I know these aren't the *best* photos, BUT my kitchen is so hard to photograph because it is really dark. And I didn't style it at all. I took them clearly because the space was actually somewhat clean for once! Promise I will take better photos for the final reveal :) The space really does feel so much brighter and the tiled backsplash gives the kitchen a more finished look.
We chose Claros Silver from the Tile Shop which is a Travertine. It co-ordinates beautifully with the Gray counters and brown tile floor and gave me the marbled look I was after. I loved the long, slim shape of the tile and decided to lay it in a subway pattern. We also updated the plate covers with these ones from Lowes which look so much better than the white plastic ones that were on there previously.
As you can also see by the wires hanging from underneath the cabinets, that we also took down the hideous florescent under cabinet lights and are currently trying to source some affordable, low profile puck lights to put in their place.
I also picked up a new rug for under the table from Joss & Main awhile back. I chose it because the square design fit perfectly under the table, AND because it is an Indoor/outdoor rug which means it can be hosed off which I GUARANTEE you will be necessary at some point living with 2 small boys. And a dog.
Speak of the devil...here's one of them now! Amusing himself while I capture a few shots. This desk area always has me perplexed. I need to come up with some sort of organizing solution that looks decent. Right now it always ends up being a catch all for mail and paperwork that comes home with the kids from school.
The rustic wood chalk boards I made were are a start, and I have folders made up for the kids school work, but it needs to look prettier. MUCH prettier. Seriously...no styling here! And if you follow me on Instagram, you would have already seen our newest kitchen splurge! The Espresso maker is a Christmas present we bought for ourselves this year. We literally got this the same day I shot these pictures, so a coffee station is now on my "to-do" list to create for this spot!
Almost forgot...the paint color is Sherwin Williams 7016 Mindful Gray and I used the Emerald line in Matte. I've said it before, but the Emerald paint by Sherwin Williams is the bomb-diggity. Hands down best paint I've ever used. It goes on like a dream, covers well, and the best part is it is SCRUBBABLE! A must have for high traffic areas and small kids. And a dog.
